Born in Wisconsin in 1962, John Spent much of his early years working on a family dairy farm. There he gained a strong work ethic and learned the importance of family. When John wasn’t working on the farm he would take long bike rides through the beautiful rural Wisconsin countryside.
It was in Wisconsin that John gained his love of nature and first encountered the intricate balance of color and texture. John is known for making the analogy: “Prairie grass or even tree bark is never just one color, then why paint our walls just one color?” John is known for incorporating a number of colors, textures and sheens in his faux and decorative painting.
After thirty years of running his own painting business and working the tools John focuses his business on the following niches: Faux and Decorative Painting, Custom Interior and Exterior Painting, Kitchen Cabinet Painting and Refinishing, Faux Finish and Texture Repairs, Staining, Wallpaper and Historic Restorations.
It was the PDCA, Painting and Decorating Contractors of America, that taught John the importance of good business practices and Craftsmanship. John is the past president of his local PDCA chapter, and has benefited from his many years of membership. John is known for saying” PDCA membership alone doesn’t make you a good contractor, but the best contractors in the country belong and membership allows you to rub elbows with them and learn how they became successful”. JMD has a BBB grade of A+ and a Google review average of Five stars. John is the winner of the National PDCA Craftsman of the year award.
John is now sharing his 30 years of experience as a subject matter expert. He regularly speaks to the painting industry. Recent topics have been: “Prep. For Success”, “The Business of Faux Painting”, “Lead Awareness in the Painting Industry” and has moderated the discussions at the National PDCA Craftsmanship Forum, 2018 and 2019.
I love to help people transform their environment into a space they desire to live, work, and play in.

JMD’s goal: To bring his love of the beauty and elegance of nature’s palette to the homes of his clients. The results of this passion can be seen in residential and commercial properties throughout the Chicagoland area.
There is a lot of painting and decorating work to be done and there are many painters willing to do that work. Not all painters are the right fit for all clients and their projects.
After a brief conversation to determine if JMD is the right fit for you, John comes out to meet you and look at your project. After careful listening to your thoughts and concerns he returns with a detailed quote and scope of work.
Sample making is an important tool we use to ensure predictable results on projects. JMD makes large color samples for regular painting jobs when there is doubt in the selected color or sheen. Samples are always included when doing decorative finishes or staining projects. Samples establish a standard for how a finish is going to look before the work is done.
ASP “Adjacent Surface Protection” is a phrase we coined. Painting is the one trade where cleanliness is essential. We thoroughly protect delicate flooring, appliances, cabinets and adjoining rooms from dust, splatters and debris. We move your large furniture and wrap it with plastic. We take pride in leaving your space cleaner than we find it.
It’s true, “it’s all in the Prep.” We take surface Prep. seriously. Cracks, nail pops, water damage, bad drywall seams or full- blown gaping holes - JMD has seen it all. JMD uses Strategic Painting Procedures developed by the PDCA. These procedures standardize our preparation and finishing tasks ensuring consistent and successful results!
